1 Bookmark the site while it's still small
We add two or three new guides a month, always focused on what actually matters to homeowners in North Port and the surrounding area. The guides cover things like well water filtration, fire ant control, FPL energy bills, and keeping a house alive through a Florida summer. I keep a running list of the most-requested topics and build those first. If you have a specific problem, the search bar at the top will eventually find something useful.
2 Start with the well water guide if you're on a private well
More than a third of North Port homes pull water from a private well, and most of those wells have sulfur, iron, or hardness problems that show up as staining, smell, or scale on appliances. That guide is live and covers everything from a $15 test kit to a whole-house softener. It's probably the most useful thing on this site for a new homeowner here.
3 Check the fire ant guide before summer hits
If you moved here from somewhere north of Georgia, you have not seen fire ants like this. North Port's sandy soil is basically ideal habitat for them, and a mound can appear in a weekend. The guide covers the two-step method that the University of Florida Extension actually recommends, and it works. Granular bait is the key — not spray.
4 Read the attic insulation guide before your next FPL bill arrives
FPL's average residential bill in Charlotte County is around $140 a month, and in a house with thin attic insulation it climbs past $200 without much effort. The attic guide covers R-38 blown-in insulation, which is what Florida building code requires for new construction and what makes the biggest single difference in cooling costs. I put a camera in my attic before doing this project and the before-and-after on the power bill was not subtle.
5 Use the hurricane prep checklist before June 1
Charlotte County is in a serious hurricane zone — Ian came through here in 2022 and reminded everyone that prep is not optional. The checklist guide covers the things people forget, like garage door bracing, storm shutter hardware, and a generator that can actually run a window AC unit. It is built around what you can do in a single weekend for under $300.
6 Find the guide you actually wanted using the search bar
If none of the above is what you came here for, the search bar at the top of the page indexes every published guide by topic, product, and problem type. Type in what's bothering you — 'mold,' 'pool,' 'palmetto bug,' whatever it is — and if we've written about it, it'll show up. If it doesn't show up, we probably haven't written it yet but we likely will.
Every page on this site was built for one reason: so you don't have to spend Saturday on hold with a contractor for something you could fix yourself.
