Sitemaps are not bad for you... ...your website is just invisible without one

How to build and submit a sitemap so Google can actually find your pages.

The situation: A sitemap is a file that tells search engines where all your pages are. Without one, Google has to guess — and it often misses pages entirely, especially on newer or smaller sites. For a local North Port business or personal project site, that invisibility is the same as not existing. Getting indexed properly is free; staying invisible costs you every month in missed traffic.

1 Generate your sitemap without touching code

If your site runs on WordPress, the Yoast SEO plugin builds and updates your sitemap automatically. You install it, turn on the sitemap feature, and it lives at yoursite.com/sitemap_index.xml from that point forward. It also pings Google whenever you publish something new. I set this up in about eight minutes and never thought about it again.

Yoast SEO Premium WordPress Plugin — 1 Site License
$99.00 ★★★★☆ 4.6 (2,100+ reviews)
"It is the most widely tested SEO plugin on WordPress and handles sitemaps, meta titles, and structured data in one install instead of three."
⚠️ Avoid: Skip the free All in One SEO pack if you are new to this — the interface buries the sitemap settings three menus deep and beginners routinely leave it misconfigured.

2 Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console

Generating the file is only half the job. You need to hand the URL directly to Google inside Search Console or it may take weeks to find it on its own. Go to Search Console, click Sitemaps in the left menu, paste your sitemap URL, and hit Submit. Google confirms receipt immediately and shows you how many pages it found versus how many it indexed.

Step 1
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools — Free Account
$0.00 ★★★★☆ 4.7 (5,000+ reviews)
"The free tier shows you broken pages, crawl errors, and missing sitemap entries that Search Console alone will not flag — useful for catching problems before they cost you rankings."

3 Crawl your own site to audit what the sitemap includes

Before you submit anything, run a crawl of your site so you know exactly what is in and what got left out. Screaming Frog SEO Spider crawls up to 500 URLs free and shows you pages that are orphaned, noindexed by accident, or returning errors. I ran it on a five-page site once and found a product page that had been set to noindex for eight months.

Step 2
Screaming Frog SEO Spider — Free Version (up to 500 URLs)
$0.00 ★★★★☆ 4.8 (3,200+ reviews)
"It is the industry-standard crawl tool for a reason — nothing else at any price shows you the full picture of what search engines actually see on your site."
⚠️ Avoid: Do not rely on online sitemap generators that just scrape your homepage links — they miss dynamically loaded pages and will give you a false sense of completeness.

4 Handle image and video sitemaps if you post media

Google has separate sitemap extensions for images and videos, and if you skip them your media will not show up in image search or video carousels. For a North Port real estate or landscaping site, those image results drive real traffic. The Rank Math plugin for WordPress generates image sitemaps automatically alongside your standard one.

Game Changer
Rank Math SEO PRO WordPress Plugin — Annual
$69.00 ★★★★☆ 4.7 (4,400+ reviews)
"Rank Math is the only freemium plugin that includes image sitemaps, video sitemaps, and local business schema in one package without a separate upsell for each."

5 Keep your sitemap clean as the site grows

A sitemap that lists 404 pages or redirected URLs actively hurts your crawl budget — Google wastes time on dead ends instead of your good content. Set a quarterly calendar reminder to re-run Screaming Frog and cross-check the sitemap. For larger sites, SEMrush's Site Audit tool does this on a schedule and emails you the report.

Pro Tip
Semrush Pro Plan — Monthly Subscription
$139.95 ★★★★☆ 4.5 (8,700+ reviews)
"The automated weekly site audit catches sitemap drift and broken links the moment they happen rather than after three months of lost indexing."
⚠️ Avoid: Skip any sitemap plugin that lets you manually add URLs one by one — you will forget to update it after every publish and the file will go stale within a month.

DIY total: $308 total if you go paid on all tools — free if you use the no-cost tiers of Search Console, Ahrefs, and Screaming Frog
vs. professional: An SEO agency charges $300–$800 for a one-time technical SEO audit that includes sitemap setup.
You save: Up to $800 saved doing it yourself in an afternoon

A sitemap is a two-dollar stamp on a letter Google was never going to open otherwise.
